Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg’s Summer Arts Festival proudly presents "In the Shadow of Memory: Late-Romantic Violin Sonatas" with Akemi Takayama as part of the Indoor Classical Concert Series on Thursday, July 9, 2026 inside the Creativity and Innovation District LLC Building.

Akemi Takayama is a professor at Shenandoah Conservatory, where she holds the Victor Brown Endowed Chair in Violin. Since 2004, she has also been serving as the concertmaster of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, and since 2007, she has also been serving as the concertmaster for the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra. A native of Japan, Ms. Takayama’s professional violin career began in Japan at the age of fifteen. She has performed throughout Japan, France, and the U.S.; recent symphony collaborations in Virginia include the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, Opera Roanoke, Shenandoah Performs, the Chamber Orchestra of Southwest Virginia, and Williamsburg Symphonia. Ms. Takayama was a member of the internationally renowned Audubon Quartet for 14 years while the group toured regionally and nationally.

Admission is free.

Curated by Associate Professor Rick Masters, this indoor concert series offers a welcoming introduction to classical music with performances suited for both newcomers and longtime listeners.

The Creativity and Innovation District LLC Building is located at 185 Kent Street in Blacksburg, VA on the campus of Virginia Tech.
